Doesn't it smell bad? Will the smell linger in my hair afterwards? Does onion juice really help with hair growth and hair loss? I'm spilling the tea and more - everything you need to know about onion juice for hair from my year long long experience.

Onion juice for healthy hair

There was so much shedding, so so so much shedding. My ends were looking sad and thin. Needless to say I wasn't retaining length and my hair journey was just looking more like a weekly trip to the market - I made a list, laid out a plan and BAM I bumped into someone I knew from long back, got side tracked and realised that I had forgotten my card and now the whole trip was going to be a waste because instead of getting what I wanted, I had to squeeze my needs into No Name brands that worked with my cash in hand budget. If you didn't follow that analogy, I don't blame you, I almost got lost in my own example. The point is, I constantly had to restart the journey and each time, I was more frustrated than the last, with no actual results.

Now, I don't have money for days and our supermarkets in my 3rd world country does not have 10 of the products named by most beauty gurus as the best. This left me with having to insert words like "natural" and "home remedies"  into all my searches. That's when I came across the onion juice method. About 20 YouTube videos and some Pinterest linked articles later, I was convinced to give it a try. Onion juice in theory has so many benefits which include:

- boosting the level of an antioxidant enzyme catalase. This enzyme helps decompose hydrogen peroxide, optimizing the hair growth cycle.

- nourish your hair follicles with its rich content of sulfur. Sulfur is essential for the regeneration of your hair follicles. The rich sulfur content also helps minimize hair thinning and breakage.

- antioxidants help reverse premature graying and delay graying.

- antibacterial properties help keep your scalp healthy and free of infection, promoting unhindered hair growth. These same properties also help control dandruff.stimulates your scalp and improves the circulation of blood, resulting in it follicles that are well-nourished.

Me and my thinning and damaged hair were definitely captivated. If you aren't, you and your content hair can stop reading right now. Everyone who was hung up on the smell clearly had not reached my level of defeat when it came to hair growth and management. So most of the comments about the smell weren't my biggest deterrent. Once I was ready, onion in hand prepared to rub that sucker all over my scalp whole, I started looking at methods to start showing my hair that I was committed to this hair journey. I was immediately blown away by the infinite methods. There are so many ways to skin a cat and they all sounded like a lot of work even though they were packed into 15 minute videos.

If you don't believe me check this out and come back to learn how I made it work for me.

how to make onion juice for hair

There was boiling, soaking and what is potentially deep frying, all with separate varying methods with other methods. I needed something that worked with my set wash day routine. To deal with the smell I had to make the onion juice part of my pre-poo routine. I won't lie, at the beginning of this, I didn't pre-poo much or at all. I was more of a suggestion that ignored, go figure why my hair wasn't thriving.

Immediately, I started having a before shampooing routine. I decided to include honey and some oils to that routine, those oils varied depending on availability of course. The main constants are always onion juice and honey. The extractions of the juice is the main part of the routine. I had no time or interest in boiling, soaking for days or frying. Simplest option is sticking a spoon in your mouth and grating the onion. The spoon trick is to stop the onion induced tears (trust me, it works). Using a cloth, place the grated onion in and squeeze out the juice. Last thing you need are onion pieces in your hair, the onion makes you cry enough without the added stress of trying to removing tiny white onion pieces from your hair.

The result after the first was amazing. I let the solution sit in my hair for at least 30 minutes and from the first was you can noticed reduced shedding. There is obviously some shedding of old hair but other than that you notice softer hair. My hair growth has improved and because my hair is healthier overall I am retaining length with ease.

One year down and I am so excited to start the second year!

Additional tips:

- Add some nice smelling essential oils, rose water or lemon juice to help kill the smell of the onion in the prepoo solution.

- Do not use more onion than you need. About a tablespoon or two of onion juice (half a small onion) is enough.

- Remember, you're mixing it with other ingredients which will make the solution enough for your whole head.

- Shampoo with an amazing smelling shampoo which you put on your hair and scalp before wetting your hair. Let the shampoo sit on your hair for a few minutes before you shampoo.Use a nice smelling conditioner afterwards, deep conditioning is recommended anyway so you should be doing that anyway.

- If you still smell the onion in your hair, it's most likely in your head and you're being paranoid.
