Have you ever wondered why some of your jeans fit great and another pair can just make you feel like going on a crazy diet? Don't worry, it's not you - it's the jeans. This is the perfect answer when your friend asks you "Do these jeans make me look fat?" Full disclosure: These are just suggestions, fashion is subjective.

Whats your body type?

If your body type is inverted triangle, square or round, low rise jeans were made for you. Pair them with any kind shirt and you're instant perfection. If your waist is a cause of concern, a flowy shirt that is tucked in or tight around the jean waistline is a chic look that's comfortable.

Triangle, hour glass and rectangle will find the high-waisted jeans more flattering. High-waisted jeans hug the curves perfectly unlike the low rise jeans which draw attention to your behind and create the illusion of a muffin top.

This would be a good time to mention that a muffin top is actually an illusion. All body types can create a muffin top when the jeans are too tight around the waist or they sit wrong. See? I told you it wasn't you. The jeans are always to blame.

Colours - do they matter?

Colouring 101 tells you that dark colours create a slimming effect while light colours accentuate or highlight. If you want to look slimmer wear dark colours and if you want to look more curvy wear light coloured jeans. When it comes to faded or white washed jeans, the same rules apply. Whatever area is lighter will be highlighted so if you're trying to look draw attention away from your thighs or behind, avoid jeans that are faded in those areas.

If the fade is abruptly cut off any where along the length of the jeans this will not only cut you at an odd angle, it will also shorten your legs as it highlights particular areas in a loud way.

Can't try the jeans on? No problem!

Zipper

Always take note of the distance between the end of the zipper and where the four seams meet. If the gap is too long the lack of detailing will cause the jeans to display what lies within the jeans. Not only is there a weird beckon to an area you don't want anyone to look at but it makes a bulge which makes your tummy look bigger.

Pockets

Large pockets will swallow your behind. The reverse is true - tiny pockets will make it look massive. Pockets that are wide apart will make your derrière enlarged but somewhat depressed. So while the attention is on your behind, it will just look sad.

The larger the distance between where your pocket ends to where you imagine your jeans crease right under your behind will create a plump and rounder effect. If your pockets sit too low the jeans will look saggy. Of course this doesn't apply for looser fitting jeans.

Care tip:

Whether you plan to keep your jeans for a month or you love them and want them in your life forever always keep the heat low. Better yet, avoid heat and hang them to air dry. The stretch that jeans have is thanks to a plastic (elastane) found woven in the fibers which gives them the stretch to hug and fit well. When heat damages the elastane your jeans will look great going on but after 5 minutes they will sag.
